  • The USP Paid Summer 2022 Internship Program offers students of scientific and business operational disciplines the fulfilling opportunity to spend 12 weeks at USP working on a defined project that expands and enhances USP's core strategic initiatives. Selected applicants will work onsite in Rockville, MD, and remotely based on positions from May through August, 2022

Eligibility and Requirements

Undergraduate juniors and senior students majoring in chemistry, biology, biochemistry, pharmacy, bioengineering, chemical engineering, or a related field are eligible for scientific roles. Other majors will be considered for business operational internships, such as marketing, finance, management, public health, or accounting.

Reference Standards Laboratory Dept. (RSL) (On-site)

RSL is primarily responsible for collaborative testing of reference standard (RS) candidates, product investigations, Continued Suitability of Use (CSU), and New Use (NU) studies. RSL executes short-term and long-term stability studies arising from product investigations or new product development. In addition, RSL supports other programs and new initiatives as needed.

During this 12 week internship, the intern will complete initial orientation to USP and Reference Standards Laboratory. The project will include working with lab scientists, technical training, job shadowing, and rotation. The interns will also perform other duties to support the day-to-day operation of the laboratory. During this period, interns will also participate in other social activities within the scope of USP policies and practices.

Reference Standards Laboratory Dept. (RSL) (Remote)

USP documentary standards require the use of physical Reference Standard RS) materials to establish quality, purity, strength and identity of medicines, foods, excipients, and dietary supplements. As new monographs are proposed, new RS are initiated. Not all monographs complete the development process. Over time, this leads to RSs that are also not developed.

During this 12 week internship, the intern will gain understanding of USP and FCC monographs, the relationship between documentary and reference standards, opportunity to directly impact USP’s public health mission by focusing resources on the right work. The intern will identify obsolete RS bulk materials. This project will involve a thorough review of new, first time RSs where development has stalled and researching associated monograph proposals to determine viability of the RS candidates. RS that are no longer anticipated to have a compendial use will be terminated and removed from the pipeline.
