Job Summary

The Aerospace Embedded & Specialized Computing Department is looking for an embedded / FPGA Engineering Intern (Part-Time) interested in building leading edge software and hardware prototypes. These prototypes and the associated lessons learned are used to make recommendations for government missions. Members of this group provide design and implementation support to a wide range of customers including the Space Force’s Space Systems Command (SSC), the National Reconnaissance Office (NRO), and other civil customers (e.g. NASA).

In this research and prototype focused role, you will join the Embedded Platforms Section which specializes in embedded implementation for specialized space-based sensors. Example projects might include hw/sw implementation for hardware accelerators, benchmarking specialized processors/algorithms, integration of cryptographic hardware, or work toward on-orbit demonstration.

Work Model

100% Remote: This position can be fully remote and located anywhere within the United States.

What You Will Be Doing

  • Design and build embedded or hardware prototypes to demonstrate new concepts for specialized compute capabilities in space (AI at the edge, security, specialized sensors).
  • Implement or integrate existing sensors on satellite or cubesat platforms. Leverage expertise of embedded architecture and design to recommend best practices for government programs of record.
  • Proactively interact with customers by presenting project status, technical findings, and technical demonstrations.
  • Keep informed of the latest products and industry trends through research and training.
  • Constantly learn and grow through new work opportunities, trainings, and mentorship from experienced staff.

What You Need To Be Successful

( Minimum requirements)

  • Currently enrolled fulltime in an accredited college/university program pursuing a BS or MS degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or other related disciplines.
  • Senior class standing (completion of Junior year)
  • Must be willing to work PT during the Fall 2022 semester
  • Familiar with Embedded design, discrete logic design (HDL including Verilog or VHDL), or both
  • Familiar with programming languages including C/C++/Python and embedded system environments such as Xilinx Zynq/Microblaze, ARM, or Altera NIOS.
  • Eligibility to obtain and maintain a security clearance, which is issued by the U.S. government. U.S. citizenship is required to obtain a clearance.
  • Proficient with version control and practiced with documentation.
  • Minimum 3.0 GPA

How You Can Stand Out

(It would be impressive if you have one or more of these)

  • GPA of 3.5 or higher
  • Active security clearance
  • Coursework, internship experience, or certification relating to machine learning, PCB layout, embedded security, high performance compute, or parallel processing
  • Working knowledge of typical hardware interfaces: I2C, SPI, GPIO, UART, etc. Working knowledge of typical subsystems (e.g., eMMc, raw NAND, etc.) and associated system level software integration.
