We are hiring a Substation Electrial Engineering Intern to join our Substation Commissioning department in Maple Grove, MN!

The intern will be required to work onsite at Maple Grove 1-2 days/week and will temporarily work remote until company protocol dictates return to the office criteria has been met.

Start Date: ASAP

The internship will be full-time (40 hours/week) during the summer and part-time during the school year. The ideal candidate will be able to commit to the itnernship for a year or longer. The Maple Grove Service Center is at 8701 Monticello Lane, Maple Grove, MN 55369.

Substation Commissioning Engineering is a growing department with several opportunities to enhance one’s knowledge of the Xcel Energy Transmission System. Our primary focus is to commission new additions to the Xcel Energy Transmission System. Successful substation commissioning involves several aspects of transmission system design: substation protection and control, protective relay settings, SCADA, project management and transmission system operations. Our responsibilities include developing automated tests, hands-on testing in substations, personnel coordination and scheduling, and providing feedback to other departments to improve future designs and procedures.

As an intern, your work will directly impact the reliability of our Transmission and Distribution systems. You will interface with several engineering departments within the company (e.g. Transmission Line Design, Substation Design, Transmission Operations, System Protection Engineering, Substation Field Engineering). This will afford you the opportunity to understand the different engineering roles and increase your overall knowledge of how our electrical system works.

Minimum Requirements

• Must be enrolled in an ABET accredited engineering program
• Major in Electrical or Computer Engineering
• Junior or Senior status preferred
• Must be proficient in Microsoft Office Suite
• Ability to communicate effectively; both written and verbally
• Must be self- motivated, have good mechanical aptitude, and ability to work well with others
• Local students from the Maple Grove, MN area and can commute to the worsite within an hour
• Must be able to work full-time (40 hours/week) during the summer and part-time during the school year

Preferred

• Course work in power generation or project management and an interest in the power industry desirable
• Familiar with Python and Access

The anticipated starting base pay for this position is: $21.20 per hour
