Interested in learning how to make positive social change? Are you currently a student working on a degree in communications, journalism, political science, public administration, or gerontology? The AARP North Carolina Office is looking for an intern to strengthen communities and advocate for what matters most to families: health security, financial stability, and personal fulfillment. We’ll challenge you to think and work in new ways. We are committed to your growth and cultivating your continued learning and development. This internship has an expected start date of Spring and will go through December 2022.
Responsibilities:
  • Enhance event participation by helping with marketing and promotion of events through social media and other platforms
  • Plan & execute community events and engage in other forms of community outreach
  • Assist with drafting press releases, event advisories, editorials, and other copy for internal and external channels
  • Pitch stories and statements to local media to support outreach (events) and advocacy
  • Seek innovative ideas and opportunities to reach out to the Hispanic/Latino community 50+, military veterans, and rural communities
  • Support our advocacy and outreach by monitoring the news environment for issues, reporters, and opportunities
  • Assist in planning, scripting, production, and editing social media videos and content
  • Design event/program fliers, graphics, and other material
Qualifications:
  • Must be enrolled in a degree program at an accredited college/university rising undergraduate juniors or seniors, graduate students, or post-doctoral students and remain academically enrolled throughout the internship or must have previously graduated from college and enrolled in a continuing education program
  • Communication, marketing, public policy, public administration, or political science background who thrives in a fast-paced, collaborative team environment
  • Excellent writing skills, event planning experience, and a good understanding of social media channels, including Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram
  • Good organizational and communications skills (both over the phone and in writing)
  • Must be able to interact and engage with members of the public
  • Experience with research projects, gathering information, culling, and capturing pertinent details with limited guidance
  • Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook
  • Interest in issues/policy relating to aging, health care, utilities, and/or financial security

Flexible Work Arrangement (FWA)
AARP observes Mondays and Fridays as telecommuting workdays, except for essential functions. Remote work and telecommuting can only be done within the United States and its territories.
