AARP’s Community, State and National Affairs (CSN) Group includes Government Relations, Programs, Volunteer Engagement, Community Outreach and Advocacy at the federal, state and local levels. It delivers on AARP’s social mission by educating and engaging people 50-plus and their families, strengthening communities, and championing issues that help give people financial and health security.

The New York State Office (Albany, NY) is looking for a graduate student intern to assist its busy office with advocacy-related work and volunteer management. We’ll challenge you to think and work in new ways. We are committed to your growth and will cultivate your continued learning and development. This is a paid internship scheduled to begin in the summer and end in December 2022.
Responsibilities:
  • Assist in grassroots organizing and advocacy efforts
  • Analyze policy, programs, and regulations that affect the 50+ population
  • Support the production and dissemination of correspondence with volunteers, members, activists, and the legislature
  • Work directly with volunteers and staff to represent AARP at local events, including forums, news conferences, and rallies spotlighting AARP issues
  • Monitor publications and news media for legislative issues of interest
  • Deliver educational and advocacy materials to legislative and/or campaign offices
  • Conduct qualitative and/or quantitative research, as needed, and research candidates and related events
  • Other related duties, as assigned
Qualifications:
  • Must be enrolled in a degree program at an accredited college/university rising undergraduate juniors or seniors, graduate students, or post-doctoral students and remain academically enrolled throughout the internship or must have previously graduated from college and enrolled in a continuing education program
  • A commitment of 25 hours per week is required
  • In-office/open office environment with the ability to work effectively surrounded by moderate noise

Flexible Work Arrangement (FWA)
AARP observes Mondays and Fridays as telecommuting workdays, except for essential functions. Remote work and telecommuting can only be done within the United States and its territories.
