Cyber Security Intern

Role Summary/Purpose:

Synchrony’s Joint Security Operation Center houses a variety of security teams for a collaborative and comprehensive approach to handling security incidents. A JSOC Cyber Security Intern will gain hands-on experience working alongside cyber analysts to provide investigative support during security incidents, assist with incident detection, and perform preliminary incident response where appropriate. Interns will be immersed in an array of monitoring technologies (e.g. SIEM, IDS, UBA, etc.) and use their analytical thinking skills to investigate alerts, identify false positive alerts, provide suggestions for reducing their rate, and become a part of the larger Information Security Picture. Additionally, interns will work with other teams in the automation of alert investigations. This role will include the research and development of solutions to improve efficiency in technical processes.

This is a summer internship opportunity - 40 hours per week for 10-12 consecutive weeks from June to August 2022. Internships will be fully remote and open to qualified students located near any Synchrony US Hub.


Essential Responsibilities:

  • Assist analysts in the investigation of alerts and take action as appropriate.

  • Assist in the creation of SOAR (Security Orchestration, Automation and Response) playbooks to automate manual and tedious alert investigations.

  • Work with other security teams within Cyber Operations to refine and transform capabilities.

  • Perform special security projects and tasks as assigned.

  • Assist in the organization and maintenance of team documentation.

  • Learn to investigate phishing attempts, User Behavior Analytics (UBA) alerts, Data Loss Prevention (DLP) alerts, IDS alerts, malware alerts, and more!

  • Perform other duties and/or special projects as assigned


Qualifications/Requirements:

  • Must be an undergraduate student enrolled in an accredited college or university and have completed your sophomore or junior year

  • A demonstrable interest and capabilities in computer science, information systems, software engineering, electrical engineering or information assurance with cyber security strongly preferred —technical majors as well as mathematics, economics, and liberal arts are applicable

  • Excellent academic record – Minimum overall 3.0 GPA or higher

  • Experience with APIs, risk mitigation, data science and network engineering is desirable

Desired Characteristics:

  • Ability to perform logical problem solving.

  • Possess basic understanding of enterprise grade technologies including operating systems, databases and web applications.

  • Ability to read and understand basic system data including security event logs, system logs, application logs, and device logs.

  • Possess personal and professional integrity.

  • Good oral and written communication skills.

  • Demonstrate understanding for basic network traffic concepts (e.g. DNS, DHCP, HTTP).

  • Basic network infrastructure knowledge (e.g. router, switch, firewall).

  • Security best practices configuration knowledge.

Eligibility Requirements:

  • You must be 18 years or older

  • You must have a high school diploma or equivalent

  • You must be willing to take a drug test, submit to a background investigation and submit fingerprints as part of the onboarding process

  • You must be able to satisfy the requirements of Section 19 of the Federal Deposit Insurance Act.

  • New hires (Level 4-7) must have 9 months of continuous service with the company before they are eligible to post on other roles. Once this new hire time in position requirement is met, the associate will have a minimum 6 months’ time in position before they can post for future non-exempt roles. Employees, level 8 or greater, must have at least 24 months’ time in position before they can post. All internal employees must consistently meet performance expectations and have approval from your manager to post (or the approval of your manager and HR if you don’t meet the time in position or performance expectations).
