Data Technician Intern
This unique opportunity is open to juniors, seniors, and graduate students pursuing a career in GIS and / Geography. This internship opportunity will provide the applicant entry-level experience with progressive responsibility and experience. The work, in the IMS Operations Group, includes the scanning / digitization of aerial and satellite film, working in a film archive pulling and boxing up film for shipment, and other hands-on support of the various missions at the EROS (Earth Resources Observation and Science) Center (http://eros.usgs.gov/), located near Sioux Falls, South Dakota. The Data Technician intern will be assigned a mentor. It is expected that the selected interns will work on site at EROS during school breaks, and/or during the summer months. This position holds potential for full-time employment upon graduation, pending project funding.
Core Responsibilities:
The Data Technician Intern is responsible for designing and implementing tasks required in the IMS Operations Group:
- Communicate and coordinate activities and technical status with your mentor, supervisor, Project Lead, and other Project team members, as appropriate
- Provides support for the scanning / digitizing aerial and satellite imagery utilizing systems such as a Phoenix “V” and “VI” production systems.
- Provides support to operate multiple scanning systems at a time
- Pulling, cleaning, and inspecting the film prior to use
- Providing quality assurance checks on scanned products
- Utilizing different software to scan and process data
- Develop and conduct calibration and testing as required
- Ensure proper process is followed and documentation is properly maintained
- Participate in peer reviews
Education: Working towards a Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Math, GIS, Geography, or equivalent and graduating in 2022, 2023 or 2024.
Experience: 0-2 year’s related experience in GIS / Geography is desired. Experience with image processing systems and film knowledge are a plus.
Required Skills:
- Excellent interpersonal, organizational, and communication skills
- Ability to work independently as well as part of a team
- Basic image processing software knowledge
- Image processing experience
- Must be able to lift-up to 25 pounds
Desired Skills:
- Adobe Photoshop
- Microsoft Office
- Experience with remote sensing, digital image processing techniques, and basic geography concepts
Candidates must have strong technical knowledge, excellent communication skills, and a teamwork emphasis. Candidates must also be able to integrate into a highly skilled Team.
The candidate must be able to obtain and maintain a national agency check and background investigation after hire to obtain a badge for facility access and user accounts.
