The Peer Mentor contributes to branch programming, services, and outreach. They will assist with the planning, implementation, and evaluation of Teen Services programs and outreach activities part of “The Commons” project. Upon completion of hours, this peer mentor will have implemented a connected learning project based on both intern interests as well as library and community needs.
The Peer Mentor position is temporary and grant funded. The Peer Mentor is required to work 30-40 hours per week.
Responsibilities Include:
  • Plans, coordinates, assists, and implements programs for all ages with an emphasis on teens and social justice.
  • Assists with the preparation, promotion, and implementation of Summer Prince George’s events.
  • Cultivates and assists the Teen Services Specialist and branch staff with maintaining relationships with community partners and customers.
  • Works closely with Adult and Senior Services Specialist, Family Literacy Specialist, the Teen Services Planning Team, and the Communication and Outreach Division.
  • Prepares correspondence and reports.
  • Creates and maintains office files and department records appropriately.
  • Acts as an ambassador and advocate for the Library.
  • Attends meetings, training, and workshops as assigned.
  • Assists with special projects as required.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
  • Current high school sophomore, junior, senior or recent graduate; and/or college freshman or sophomore.
  • Bilingual in English and a second language preferred.
  • Strong communication and customer service skills.
  • Strong organization and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work independently and in a team environment.
  • Ability to follow verbal and written instructions.
  • Ability to gain working knowledge of PGCMLS' practices, policies and procedures.
  • Ability to act as a representative of PGCMLS to the public.
  • Basic knowledge of computer systems including hardware and software, such as Google Suite, electronic databases, e-mail, internet navigation and other office equipment.
  • Ability to reach, pull, push, bend, stoop, and frequently lift or move up to 20 pounds.
