Internships are paid and Interns are eligible for travel privileges.
Interns are placed throughout our system, depending on the project / discipline; however, this year most work will be done remote. Travel for certain internships could be a part of the work program. Additionally, interns will have access to valuable training, facility tours, airport experiences and other benefits that make United Airlines the premier company to intern for. Company business related travel expenses will be reimbursed by United per the Travel Policy.
Technical Operations
Technical Operations is the maintenance, repair, and overhaul division of United. The department includes aircraft maintenance technicians, engineers, planners, ground equipment and facilities teams, supply chain teams and more.

Our teams will be looking for your curiosity and your unique point of view. Our Tech Ops internship provides hands-on, real-world experience. As an intern with United, you are more than a student – you are a member of our team.
We are hiring interns for the summer in the following areas. Based on your qualifications you can be placed in one of the many of the teams that support our operations.
Highlights of teams below:
Engineering and Maintenance Programs: You may work with engineers in writing engineering paperwork, analyzing maintenance programs, or assisting in analyzing data from a wide variety of data bases. We recruit for students in mechanical, electrical, aeronautical, and aerospace engineering degree programs as well as other technical related degree programs.
Planning: Optimize maintenance plans to minimize out of service aircraft, maximize capacity utilization, and reduce overall life cycle cost. We recruit students from engineering, mathematics, and business administration degree programs.
Data Analytics: Data mining, discovering trends, creating analysis, assisting with continuous improvements, and giving presentations. We recruit students from degree programs quantitative field like mathematics, statistics, computer science, engineering, and econometrics. With experience or familiarity with coding in Python and/or R; database querying tools (ex. SQL); visualization tools (ex. Tableau, Spotfire) and manipulating and analyzing complex, high volume, high dimensionality data from various sources to highlight patterns and relationships.
Process Standardization and Strategy: Manage process improvement, process standardization, and evaluating technology solutions. We recruit students from degree programs in computer science, computer or electrical engineering, information management & technology industrial or general engineering information systems.
Airframe Vendor Maintenance: Compare financial and performance data across and within MRO vendors. We recruit students from degree programs from engineering, business logistics, or finance.
In this role, you will work within a team to develop a long-term strategic plan for aircraft maintenance.
Responsibilities could include:
- Preparation of cost-benefit analyses on project
- Review of aircraft maintenance tasks and planning strategies
- Development of aircraft maintenance strategies
- Extract data from a variety of sources for use in analysis and models to communicate results
- Data-based modeling/forecasting
- Cross-functional collaboration to achieve desired results
Required
- Bachelor’s degree in mechanical, industrial, or other related engineering/technical field
- Bachelor’s degree in business administration, operations or other business logistics field
- Experience developing processes within business operations/processes
- Experience working with cost performance, demand forecasting, budgeting
- Ability to analyze complex issues, detailed level of project management
- Must have a minimum of 12 semester hours in core degree course work
- Individual should be a rising junior (at minimum) when internship begins
- Summer internships occur end of May/beginning of June – mid/late August
- If needed, United will provide air transportation to/from internship location during the term of employment for any scheduled meeting
- Work related travel may be required, individuals must be able to travel without any restrictions
- Must be legally authorized to work in the United States for any employer without sponsorship
- Successful completion of interview required to meet job qualification
- Reliable, punctual attendance is an essential function of the position
