The Content and Graphic Design intern with the Virginia Department of Social Services’ Office of Organizational Transformation will provide a graduate or undergraduate college student an opportunity to combine their academic studies with on-the-job training and experience while completing their education. The internship program is designed around a project-based assignment, which will support the mission of the agency and the career goals and interests of the intern.

The Content and Graphic Design Intern will report to the Employee and Organizational Strategy Consultant and gain project based work experience by:

  • Researching best practices for driving organizational brand awareness
  • Collaborating with subject matter experts on professional network page content and design strategy
  • Designing and delivering VDSS professional network pages (i.e, LinkedIn Recruiter or LinkedIn Career pages)
  • Writing and editing various internal and external communications, social media posts, newsletters, etc.
  • Monitoring professional network web pages to analyze usage and trends
  • Updating professional network web pages to increase traffic and remain new & relevant
  • Creating and maintaining content calendar for professional network pages

This position will have the opportunity to learn from and work alongside VDSS professionals to develop visual concepts intended to captivate, inform, and/or inspire the end user; and other duties as assigned that may enhance the learning experience.

The intern will work the majority of the time in a telework environment with some work taking place in the office as needed.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Rising junior, senior, or graduate student enrolled in an accredited university or college in good academic standing
  • Pursuing a major in Graphic Design, Marketing, Media Arts & Design, Communication Arts, Mass Communications or a related area
  • An ability to think creatively and translate bold ideas into engaging designs
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills and the ability to craft engaging copy to accompany your designs
  • Knowledge of graphic design principles and techniques and skilled in the use of graphic arts equipment and tools
  • Ability to collaborate to understand the graphic needs of others
  • A strong portfolio showcasing creative work, including illustrations or other graphics.
  • Familiarity with professional social media websites (i.e., LinkedIn, GlassDoor, Indeed)
  • Demonstrated ability to multitask while keeping deadlines
  • Must have access to the Internet
  • Portfolio showcasing creative work
  • Intermediate to advanced level experience designing and developing work products with the Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign)
  • Computer experience including Microsoft Office Suite
  • Familiarity with office equipment
  • Ability to work the entire duration of the internship program, May 23, 2022 – August 12, 2022.

Preferred Qualifications
  • GPA of 3.0 or higher
  • Ability to analyze data and previous experience creating data visualizations
  • Self-driven and an ability to propose new creative ideas
  • Demonstrated ability to build effective relationships
  • Ability to assist in template document and resource creation (i.e. presentation decks, one-pagers)
  • Ability to take quality notes and be able to translate team directives into completed projects
  • Ability to complete design assessment, if part of the recruitment process
  • Experience managing or leading projects
  • Experience with video creation and editing software (i.e., Adobe Systems Adobe After Effects, WebVideo)
